             SKIN PROBLEMS IN DOGS

                          Healthy & shiny skin  make a pet apple of eye in owner as well as in spectators .Skin diseases are another serious problem in our pets . Skin diseases may occur due to various reason .Use of carbolic acid containing agents in kennels,use of shampoo or soap of different PH, fungal infections, parasites and also nutritional. Mange is common occurrence in pets caused by mites .

Mange in Dog

It is otherwise known as Demodectic mange, Follicular mange etc. This make our pet a ugly look.

Causative Agent

Demodex canis :It is a commensal in dog's skin. The adult mite invade to the hair follicle and sebaceous gland  later which become distended with  mite and inflammatory materials and this make lesions on the skin. 

Clinical signs

 1.Blood oozing nodules & pustules 

 2.General hair loss,

 3.Thickening of the area

Diagnosis

Microscopical examination of deep skin scrapings reveal cigar shaped organism

Treatment

1. Ivermectin:- it is a avermectin derivative. Rate of administration 200mcg/Kg Body weight  through s/c or oral route.

2.Benzyl peroxide(2.5%)

3.Amitrz:- It is a Tri-azeidentadiene ectoparasiticide active against Tick,lice,fleas and mites .A solution of 12.5%w/v is available . Dilution rate 3-4ml/Liter of water , externally.

4.Herbal immune modulator

Prevention

Since this is transmitted through contact , avoid contact with affected animals to prevent the disease.

Consult your nearest veterinary doctor  for differential diagnosis & effective treatment.

       PET THE COMPANION- PIGEON

 They are the most common birds in the world.Seen almost in all countries.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Pigeons and dove are belong to family Columbidae. They are known to kept by human from ancient time itself.                               

Trained pigeons used  for carry messages to various destination.  Like long migratory birds, pigeon possess  ability to locate 

geological markers like mountains,river and sea to correct their flight path to reach the location. 

So they are invariably used in war by various countries for this purpose till date.

Doves are smaller while pigeons are larger.

Family columbidae consists of  310 species .They primarily feeds on seeds,fruits and vegetables.

The columbidae family divided in to two (1) seed eating Granivorous species  (2) Fruit eating Frugivorous species.

 Pigeons are very influencing birds in our cultural life. In Christianity dove symbolizes Holy spirit.(PEACE DOVE)

Vaccination
  
Vaccination should be done in healthy animals only. Age of vaccination is 3-4 months. If the pup is from a immunized mother ,vaccination before 2 months has no value as it got circulating antibody which neutralize the Antigen(vaccines).

Things to be remember before vaccination
1. Animal should be free from any infections.
2.Free from parasitic infestations .
3.Should be examined for microfilaria in blood.
4.Regular deworming
5.Healthy in all aspect.
Vaccination schedule for 2-3 months pups(REGULAR REGIMEN)
1. First vaccine:- Multi-component vaccine (against commonest occurrence like Leptospira,Canine Distember,infectious canine hepatitis,canine parvo viral infections.)
 
 CANINE DISTEMBER:-Causative agent Paromyxo virus.Symptoms include biphasic fever,pneumonia,vomiting,diarrhea,vesicular and pustular dermatitis etc.

CANINE PARVO VIRAL INFECTIONS:-Causative agent Parvo virus. Symptoms include vomiting,hemorrhagic diarrhea with fowl smell,Myocarditis etc.

INFECTIOUS CANINE HEPATITIS:- Causative agent Canine Adeno virus. symptoms include high fever ,vomition,acute abdominal pain mucopurulent nasal discharge, corneal opacity, diarrhea, BLUE EYE in dogs.

LEPTOSPIROSIS:- Leptospira canicola, L.heammorhagicae are the causative agents
 
Multi-component vaccine 1 ml S/c or I/m at the age of 8-12 WEEKS .Booster dose to be given after 3 weeks.This will protect the pup for a year. regular annual vaccination is a must in time.
 
 Vaccines used are :Mega vac 6,Vanguard,Nobivac DHPPi etc.
2.Second vaccine:- Anti rabies vaccine. It is very important as RABIES is a DANGEROUS zoonotic disease in our society particularly in KERALA, because of abundance of stray dogs.
Rabies is caused by virus from Rhabdo viridae family This not only affect canidae family but also Bovidae, Felidae and human that is why it become important zoonotic disease
The virus present in natural reservoir host like fox,bat,mongoose where it do not show any signs of disease but act as carrier of causative agent to other healthy animal including dogs.
Saliva of affected animal is dangerous because of the presence of virus sufficient to infect.
Bite of affected animal thus become dangerous as it contains virus.The virus affect nervous system.
Death occurs because of cardiopulmonary arrest in affected animal.
Treatment not a success once symptoms are shown.Thus immunization become important.
 
So Anti Rabies vaccine (Prophylactic Anti Rabies [PAR]) 1 ml S/c or I/m at the age of 8-12 WEEKS to be given for our pups .Booster dose to be given after 3 weeks.This will protect the pup for a year. regular annual vaccination is a must in time. .
 
 Vaccine used are Raksha rab,Nobivac -Rabies,Rabi vac vet. etc


3.Third vaccine-Multi component (against Leptospira,Canine Distember,canine parvo viral infections.) this is Booster dose and done after 14/21 days after second vaccination.
 
 4.Fourth vaccine-Anti Rabies vaccine. This to be done after 14/21 days after Third vaccination. Booster dose.
After this we have to follow regular vaccination ANNUALLY. All this done under the supervision of a expert veterinary practitioner. This protocol not only protect your pet but also most dangerous zoonotic disease Rabies and thus serving our society also.
